Welcome to my class!
You've registered for Nutrition 160-01 (CRN #87828 for Fall; CRN #14249 for Spring), Monday and Wednesday from 6:10-7:30pm, Room 143 Annex 1, Allied Health Science Building

Hello!  It is my intention to make this introductory course on human nutrition interesting, flexible, and self-paced.

By interesting, I mean that I want to present the course in a way that helps you to want to learn about nutrition.  We all have to eat.  What we eat can affect how we feel.  I want to help you make informed choices about what you eat.

By flexible, I mean that you can study my class notes on the assigned text and then determine how much lecture and explanation you need from me in order to understand the material.  I've pulled my class notes from the assigned textbook for this course ("Understanding Nutrition," 10th Edition, by Ellie Whitney and Sharon Rady Rolfes).  I highly recommend that you purchase this text because it will serve as a life-long reference document.  My class notes are a summary of what I think is the critical information from the textbook.  In the "Assignment" section of the webpage you will find summaries for each chapter.

By self-paced, I mean that you can schedule to take your exams and turn in your reports in advance of the scheduled date, with bonus points added.  This offer includes the final.  Or, you can take any of the exams and turn in the reports late, with penalty points deducted.  You can take your exams during any of the regularly scheduled classes.  However, any night of the school week or weekend is fine provided that you first get a confirmation from me on the pre-arranged time and date.

The final exam consists of selected questions from each of the exams, along with a few general questions from the assigned topics for each report.

In order to facilitate the development of your critical thinking skills, I am requiring you to write three papers.  I have already determined the topics and noted them in the "Class Schedule."  I am providing you a format to follow, as well as advance notice of how I will grade the paper.  As with the exams, if you complete a paper in advance of the assigned date, you will receive bonus points.  I intend to focus my efforts on providing you guidance on developing your reports during class time.  Consequently, unless otherwise notified, I expect to be at the classroom for each scheduled class to answer questions related to the reading material and to provide suggested edits on your draft reports, as well as administer exams.  Note, however, that I plan to leave the classroom after 20 minutes if no student arrives within this timeframe, or hasn't arranged to meet with me later in the scheduled class period.

I do have a full-time job that may require me to travel during the semester.  I will keep you updated as to whether I will or will not be available.  Please
check the following webpage (http://www.dlengeljohn.com) daily for updates.  Meanwhile, if you need to get in touch with me, email works best for me.  Be sure to start the subject line with "HU Student" so that I will know that I should immediately attend to the message.

I hope that my course design facilitates your learning.
I look forward to our shared learning experience.  Best wishes, Dr. Engeljohn.

LATEST UPDATE

Important Updates (class now meets in Room #124) -- May 8, 2012:

  • Thanks to everyone for a super class this semester.  Best of luck to everyone with your careers.  Dr. Engeljohn.

Prior Updates:

  • The final is Monday, May 7 at the regular class time and place.  Please arrange with Dr. Engeljohn to bring make-up exams to the classroom.  All reports must be submitted by midnight, May 7 in order to be factored into the final grade.  Final grades will be posted May 7.
  • Grades are posted at the "Practice Exams and Grades" subpage at the "Table of Student Actual Scores" link.
  • Cheating -- Students, again,  were caught cheating on exams by trying to hide practice exams and using iPads with the practice exams evident on the screen.  Please place all items on the floor and do no use ear pieces or place your handheld/IPods on your lap or in view.
  • As a reminder, for the reports, you must identify within the text which tables you are discussing, along with an explanation of the relevance of the table variables.  In addition, if the text for the report is less than 3 full pages, points are deducted.  Do not count the space taken up by the title and the references.
    • Please check the "Table of Student Actual Scores" on the Practice Exams and Grades subpage to verify whether you are listed as registered in the course.  The last four digits of your student ID are included on the report (numbers are arranged roughly by alphabetical order of students last name).
    • NOTE -- For the reports, I've posted a clarification about what I expect you to write about.  I inadvertently failed to change the information contained in the Class Schedule.  You are NOT to write about the Methods Section.  Instead, I've modified the Class Schedule to reflect what I correctly stated in the Class Grading instruction.  You are to focus on at least one table from each article and write about the content and meaning of the table.  Identify which table you are writing about.  Also, you should add information about the conclusion stated at the end of the article.  Please note this clarification.
    • Welcome.  Information for the class can be found at:  www.DLEngeljohn.com/index/html.  The class notes are provided at this website.  Students are not required to purchase a textbook for this course.
    • Students, please do not try to hide the use of your handheld devices (e.g., IPod) to cheat on the exams.  It is not worth it because I deduct points from your score.
Welcome.  Please go to the various sub-pages to obtain reading assignment and other handout materials.  I hope you enjoy the class.
  • The classnotes for this class are available on this website and should be sufficient for your review in order to prepare for each exam; you do not need to purchase a textbook for this class; there will be 5 exams (4 covering the 20 chapters in the class notes and a final); and there will be 3 written reports covering pre-selected topics.
  • Be sure to pace yourselves and do everything you can to earn all the bonus points; be sure to confirm with me in advance if you plan to take an exam prior to the scheduled date so that I can bring a copy to the classroom!
  • NOTE:  For the four regular exams, I have posted approximately 70% of the actual test questions for your review in the "Practice Exams and Grades" subpage!!!  For the final, I've posted the number of questions coming from each of the 20 chapters.  All but six of the questions can be found in the practice exams.  The six questions not found in the practice exams are derived from obvious facts taken from the required articles you are assigned for the 3 reports.
